Land this gig, and your friends will have no problem recognizing the company you work for: It’s a household name in the media sector and part of the American cultural landscape. They are currently undergoing a bit of a renaissance and right now, they’re on the lookout for a bright, ambitious accountant to join the squad handling Accounts Payable and other functions. If that’s you, and you’re looking to ply your trade at an established-yet-growing prestigious company with high name-recognition, this one is perfect for you.
The Nitty Gritty
As both the internal and vendor point of contact for all things AP, you’ll manage such things as billing and revenue recognition, the monthly expense report approval process, internal and external sales commission calculations, the monthly closing process and journal entries, and bank records. You’ll also make yourself available to the CFO and/or controller to work with outside auditors and tax accountants and for ad-hoc requests. It’s a juicy chunk of work that will put you front-and-center in the accounting organization, with plenty of visibility and room to show your stuff to people who matter.
Hired Gun Profile
You’ve got three to five years of some combination of in-house and/or public accounting experience, with a solid education in and understanding of GAAP. As for the tools of the trade, you’ve both worked with a goodly number of technology platforms – accounting systems, AP, online banking, order-management systems, maybe NetSuite – and also have the capability of quickly rising to power-user level in the ones to which you haven’t yet been exposed. As for Excel specifically, you’re a wicked, wicked monkey, able to cough up a pivot table like nothing, and you reach for a VLOOKUP function the way most people reach for a pencil.
Personality-wise, of course we’re looking for someone with a strong work ethic who leaps in and gets work done without prodding or coddling. But because so much is new and changing within this organization, it’s going to feel a lot like a startup, which calls for flexibility, willingness to learn new skills, and a flair for multitasking. That’s you, though, right?
This company’s bread-and-butter is in the media/DIY/home space, so be sure to tout any relevant experience in those areas.
There’s a lot to love about the opportunity for a high-profile accounting role at a storied company that’s buzzing with energy as it reinvents itself.
