Our client is a prestigious, complex healthcare organization which includes one of the country’s foremost medical schools. It’s on a constant quest to leverage all forms of technology to improve the experiences of its patients, and it’s now searching for just the right product manager to be the owner/visionary/doer/all-around maven of search functionality for its websites. And we were just sitting here thinking about how, what with your exceptional problem-solving skills, infectious spirit of collaboration, top-notch web-development chops and desire to make a difference in the world, you’d be just right for the job. Dead-on, or what?
Upon your capable shoulders shall fall the task of continually enhancing search, beginning with the .edu domain but in such a holistic way as to be able to extend your efforts directly onto .org, tying everything together in the most elegant way possible. While there’ll be a recognizable whiff of UX about your work –with acceptance criteria an important part of your mandate – you ought to consider this as essentially back-end optimization of the engine itself, along with its filters. As an Agilist, you’ll be shaping your product with both user considerations and business problems in mind, striving for highly applicable solutions founded upon realistic requirements – which will mean knowing how and when to say no to unrealistic requests and unnecessary complications. At every step of the way, you’ll be asking yourself and others why certain content – researcher bios, news articles, what have you – is important for searchers to find and for stakeholders to make conspicuous, and how best to deliver the results they need.
Hired Gun Profile
The two make-or-break characteristics here are going to be technical prowess and personality. That is to say: you’ll be more apt to win this one not by cataloguing year after year of experience but by demonstrating your ability to craft smart solutions to complex problems in an Agile environment, and by showing that you have an uncommon flair for teamwork coupled with the ability to assert yourself within an organization when you’re confident that you’ve found the best way forward.
In full disclosure, this is a function that has not had a dedicated owner up to this point; so be prepared to lay out something of a vision for how you might go about filling that gap.
We love placing Guns with this company, which enjoys a well-deserved reputation for nurturing its employees, and we think there’s a particular appeal to the product-ownership aspect of this gig.
