It’s not clear when, but at some point, somebody somewhere decided to use the word “sexy” in a corporate context. We’re not talking about this Cosmo article, “8 Ways to be Sexy and Classic at Work” or this somewhat disturbing page of “Sexy Corporate Stock Photos.” We’re talking about sexy as it applies to the work, i.e. contemporary, exciting and easy to brag about. Our client, a true product innovation kaleidoscope, is like, 1970s-Mick-Jagger sexy, and they’re looking for someone to bring their internal and external marketing/communications materials to life through narrative strategy and creative design.
Put simply, this company ideates and designs cool products for huge companies. Whether it’s new business or a long-term client, part of that work is making these companies see the light. Sometimes, they need to be talked into jumping off the deep end into innovation. This isn’t surprising. I mean, think of Thomas the Apostle in John 20:24-29. It wasn’t until he touched the wounds of crucifixion that he truly believed Jesus had risen. Okay, maybe that analogy is a little too non-secular. The point is, our client needs someone who can help illuminate their raison d’etre to build, strengthen and maintain relationships.
Yes, this role will feature a lot of Powerpoint and whitepapers. But it’s more than that. You’ll be working with a team of researchers and writers to tell great stories, both client-facing and internal. Think of it like directing a movie adaptation. The narrative is there, but it’s up to you as a director to find and relate new meaning through your medium; and with this client, these stories are less Dick and Jane and more Ulysses. You’ll take those elements of typography, hierarchy and layout you know so well, and help turn gold into dynamite.

If you’re interested in this gig, you should have all the things a great digital designer has: strong conceptual vision, diverse software chops and a heart of gold. You need to be able to work with complex ideas and push their creators to work within your medium. Experience with any type of innovation would be great, but a familiarity with consumer-facing products will put you over the edge.
You’ll need to have a vested interest in making these stories sing. These guys are passionate about innovating on a world-changing level, so the more gravitas you can bring to the table, the better.
This role has the potential to kick off a nice growth spurt within the company. If you hit the ground running, you may have a shot at a bigger fish down the road.
This is the perfect role for an experienced designer looking to sex up their career. If you’re a strong conceptual thinker with a taste for innovation, this is the gig for you.
