It puts a glad song in our hearts when we’re able to offer a gig like this one, a gig that truly has it all: Not only is it with a well-funded, very cool and very smart company that’s revolutionizing the video revolution; it also calls for significant big-picture leadership rather than humdrum grunt work. All we know is that if we were an experienced design/UX pro looking to spread the old managerial wings in one of the most alluring and interesting workplaces out there, we’d be slobbering all over this one.
If hunkering down in the trenches and conducting UX and/or design work is where you’re at, then you might as well click the Back button on your browser right about now. This job is for someone who will, with relish, oversee that kind of work, making sure that it’s done by the very best people in the very best way. Which means hiring choice product designers, motion designers, graphic designers and UX researchers, and then mentoring the hell out of them, building the team, creating career paths, elevating the entire outfit. Think about the gig this way: Your remit is not product A nor product B, nor even products A and B, but rather the entire company and its very approach to design. Design principles, design thinking, design function – that’s all yours. As such, you’ll be the champion of design thinking and lean UX practices across the product teams and wherever you touch down within the company: marketing, product management, customer support – everywhere you go you’ll be thinking about the total user experience and turning your colleagues into raging customer empathists.
Hired Gun Profile
The threshold these folks have in mind is five years-plus of experience, but there’s a bit of a catch: That’s five years of leadership, not just five years of design work. You’ve made a bit of a name for yourself building design teams at iterative product-development organizations, such that you’re entirely comfortable leading teams through solution discovery. A goodly portion of your experience has been with a consumer digital company offering both web and mobile applications, where you’ve successfully taken new products clear through to market. Backing up those stellar leadership qualities (recruiting, hiring, mentoring) are bedrock product design and UX skills, of course. That is, you’re in a leadership role not for want of such skills, but because you’ve got them in spades plus an enviable knack for organization, an ability to inspire the very best work in people, and the kind of personality that makes folks naturally want to fall in line behind you.
This company puts a high value on humility backed by confidence, on having a cultivated eye for solutions, and on the constant drive to succeed. What stories from your experience can you tell that illustrate these?
This is a rare opportunity to join a company that’s just plain fun to work at, in a capacity that will call on everything you’ve learned as a design pro and as a leader of people.
