You want juicy? We’ve got your juicy: Here’s a chance to join an in-house, agency-style skunkworks doing the very latest and greatest in the internet of things, home version. As this elite squadron develops ever-more-sophisticated and interconnected smart home solutions, you’ll be there as the representative of us the people, ensuring their intuitiveness and ease of use, and giving all this tech its human face. Usually to get this kind of work, you’d be out doing the agency hustle, but we’re talking here about cutting-edge work from within a massive and very stable company. It’s the best of both worlds, baby; and baby, that’s juicy.
When you come on board, you’ll see that a lot of the product has already been built and is waiting for you and your expertise and your vision to transmogrify it from what’s essentially an incomprehensible bundle of wiring to something your grandmother could manipulate on her smartphone (and enjoy it, at that). So of course you’ll do what you do, which is to bring yourself up to speed on the underlying tech, come to an understanding of the requirements, find the key engagement points, and identify the human factors that will inform our interactions with the tech, both architecturally and in terms of the details of the interfacing tools.
You won’t be doing it alone, of course: Besides constant interaction with engineers and developers, you’ll have your own small staff (3-4) of UX pros to test, study, sketch, report and suggest.
Hired Gun Profile
You’ve been coming on up through the UX track for several years now, in-house and/or agency, having ended up in that space not by virtue of any lack of technical prowess but by the deep feeling of satisfaction it brings you to bridge the gap between humans and machines. You’re far enough into your career that you have some experience managing people (and find that you both enjoy it and are good at it). You love working on a team and, of course, are thrilled at the thought of working on truly groundbreaking products that will change the way we live our everyday lives.
While there’s a highly creative element to this job – you might even liken it to an associate creative director role – be sure to sell us on how well you understand the technology that underlies these kinds of products.
Coming from where you’re coming from, you surely see the significance of the smart home and the internet of things – so for you to place yourself in a prominent role on a prominent team at a prominent company that’s going to have an unmistakable impact on that space . . . . it’s hard not to call this a career game-changer, juicy in the extreme.
