Let’s say you’re a really seriously gifted tech pro with a ridiculously collaborative temperament and the kind of vision that’s both broadly strategic and deeply skilled. And let us further say that one of the country’s biggest and most respected distributors of news information is looking for a person just like you to join its core product leadership team. Would you then agree that it would be foolish indeed for you to do anything but get yourself into the running, ASAP? We sure think so.
The Nitty Gritty
As you picture this work, the thing to bear in mind is that this is not some clunky old media outfit looking to go digital; the company went digital ages ago, and the call here is for someone who can shepherd the firm from now-digital to future-digital — digital as it will exist on the cutting edge in the next few years. You’ll be the kind of thought leader who comes on board and applies deep, engineering-level knowledge of products and tech to help the team arrive at the very best solutions to move forward with. It won’t be simple — we’re talking about a media empire with more than 100 outlets reaching a monthly audience of more than 100 million people. So, a sense of scale is key.
With that scale in mind, you’ll keep an eye on both the local digital solutions network and on the core digital products team. As you help build the vision for the next few years, you’ll manage product release schedules and make iterative changes to new and existing products to keep the company right at the cutting edge. You’ll evangelize for your vision and for specific products that you know to be winners.
Hired Gun Profile
Let’s talk about the technical stuff first, because it’s important. Your tech background is deep and involved – you know how to create fantastic, fresh user experiences. You’re consummately comfortable with more than one CMS; you’ve worked in technical architecture (perhaps at the engineering level); you know a number of programming languages, native and web, ios and Android; you’re clued in to all the best current technologies and are passionate about knowing what’s coming next.
But here’s what makes you different from others whose geek-force is just as strong in them: You’re also an outgoing, talented manager, with a sales-y demeanor (and we mean that in the best possible way) and an ability to inspire. You love to share your vision, to get people on board, and then to collaborate the hell out of a solution. You thrive on facing complex problems head on and tapping into the talents throughout your environment to solve them.
We’re not sure if you see strengthening the press as an important way of helping out in the world over the next several years, but this client does – so even if you don’t have a news background, sharing your passion for a robust Fifth Estate will not be wasted breath.
This is one of those moments when several factors are aligned in your favor: It’s a moment in the history of our country in which news will have unprecedented importance; it’s a moment in the life cycle of this company in which major technological product advances are expected; and it’s a moment in your career when you’re ready to take a senior and hugely important role at a major company. Do it!
