The Hired Guns seek a visionary Apparel Designer for the adventurous offer of a lifetime, relocating to paradise with expenses covered by an employer whose garments clothe the Western Hemisphere.
The Nitty Gritty
The backstory on the organization and why they need to hire you!
You’ll never see a deal like this again; a huge activewear brand wants an Apparel Designer for its Caribbean production facility. You’ll get a free house and car, as well as private school for kids if needed. On top of that they offer an international allowance, a bonus, health insurance, and a pension!
Your team is small but diverse, tight-knit (get it?), and fast-paced. As you move from engineering to design, you’ll gain experience at every level, creating a variety of clothes for both men and women, aimed at functionality and performance — with a focus on knit tops and some woven fabrics (mainly denim poly-woven). Your work will be distributed across multiple channels, including wholesale to the biggest-name outlets.
Let’s not gloss over: your new office is on a gorgeous island even by Caribbean standards. Oh, and you’ll travel a lot.
The Quest
What success looks like in your first year…
Oversee the smooth production of wholesale and direct-to-consumer goods that merge high fashion principles with basic fashion wearability, using integrated product lifecycle management. Goals are: reduced production time, strong selling points, and exciting new designs that push the brand forward.
Why You?
How you’ll know if you’re a fit…
You’re an adventurous, highly creative Apparel Designer, design manager, or even associate designer ready for your close-up, with manufacturing experience in ready-to-wear garb for both men and women. Designers with a fashion background, especially paired with illustration, are warmly welcomed to apply — because you’ll be constantly sketching new designs. (Technical designers who fit this profile are also encouraged to throw their hats in the ring!)
Your eyes and fingertips are always searching for influences, online and in the real world, so you never run out of ideas (which never fall behind the trends).
Tell Me About a Time When …
The interview questions you need to rock to score a “swipe right”…
- Where do you get design inspiration? They want people who can extrapolate tomorrow’s trends from social media while researching the day after tomorrow’s trends in deeper corners of the web and the world.
- Tell us about the challenges you’ve solved in manufacturing. The scale is going to vary here as much as the product, so you need to be ready for all the proportionate hiccups.
- What’s your experience sketching out a cost breakdown by order spec? Share your process for moving a creative vision forward.
The Inside Skinny
Why you should quit your job right now and join this organization!
Washed-down denim will be a new focus for this company in 2020, so bring a portfolio that shows what you can do with it, and dazzle them with the possibilities. This time next year, you’ll be sipping piña coladas on the beach (presumably it’s a weekend this time next year, because your work weeks are going to be gloriously busy).
