The Hired Guns are seeking a savvy Business Editor who is extremely familiar with the ins and outs of the San Francisco and Silicon Valley business communities and can broaden and deepen business coverage for an innovative, fast-growing news site.
Salary range: $110,000 to $170,000 per year
- Use your unique editorial chops to create a must-read business section
- Work at an exceptionally well-funded media outlet
- Enjoy a buzzy newsroom and collaborate with some of the most talented editorial minds in the Bay Area
The Nitty Gritty
The backstory on the company and why they need to hire you!
As Business Editor, you’ll be building a business section unlike anything else in the Bay Area media landscape. You’ll shape local and national coverage and trends. Plus, you’ll take ownership of the voice, tone, and POV of the business section of a vibrant, fast-growing media site. You’ll collaborate with top-notch editors and writers, lead a team of 4-6 reporters to success, and be a pivotal part of a fast-growing organization. You will also help this site conceive and execute new business-related features and products for their most loyal readers to enhance engagement and loyalty.
Why You?
How you’ll know if you’re a fit…
You’re the ideal candidate if you came up the ranks in a digital-forward newsroom, first as a business reporter prior to becoming a business editor—a role we’re hoping you have approximately 5 years of experience doing. You have a strong understanding of the Bay Area business landscape and deep experience covering topics such as technology, banking, real estate and, of course, all the palace intrigue within Silicon Valley. You also have a firm grip on which local business stories will be able to pop out nationally and go viral. Finally, you have had success curating “fan bases” of dedicated readers who follow your take on business news voraciously.
Obviously you have excellent editing capabilities and command of AP style. You must have strong news judgment and the ability to identify and develop story ideas. Journalistic integrity and the ability to lead a team of reporters to success are non-negotiables. Skills in mapping, data visualization, and other related skills are a plus.
The Inside Skinny
Why you should quit your job right now and join this team!
In the Bay Area, the tech industry and its ecosystem are the beating heart, like show biz in LA or finance in NYC. With a style and strategy that is all your own, and a world-class team that you are going to build, your coverage of the SF business beat will give you a megaphone that echoes way beyond San Fran and the Valley. Sounds kinda cool, doesn’t it?
