Wanted: a straight-shooting, passionate Chief Technology Officer with an open-source ethos and gigabytes of experience keeping forward-thinking media companies way out in front of the competition. Our client: an online publisher with an enviable stable of sites that are the definitive sources of breaking news and trade information in the worlds of entertainment, music, film and advertising.
You are a technology thought leader in the media space who’s been there and done it all. You’re a highly respected tech manager: developers love working with you because you don’t roll over, and senior managers want you on their team because you tell it like it is and yet still manage to do the seemingly impossible. You’ve got hands-on experience building the technological architecture that enabled brand websites to scale up exponentially, with the ability to handle enormous day-to-day traffic as well as monstrous event-based spikes (think Super Bowl or World Series for a sports site, or the major awards broadcasts for entertainment sites).
You’re a devotee of the Agile approach and a believer in responsive design. Ideally, you’ve worked with large-scale Drupal sites (even better, you’ve led a Drupal migration). Less ideal but still great would be a strong background in PHP. You’ve integrated enterprise-level services like Silverpop, Brightcove, DoubleClick, and similar providers.
That’s a lot already, but we’re going to push our luck even more here: you’ve worked on mobile apps, built sites for mobile/tablet platforms, developed social networking applications, implemented cloud-computing solutions, and overseen system and network administration. A background in onshoring and offshoring development to contain costs and encourage growth is also great to have on your CV.
The company is growing rapidly and needs a technology leader who exhibits grace under fire. Working with other C-level leaders, you will set the strategy, growth, and development timeline for all digital media technology initiatives. The buck will stop with you when it comes to revamping and creating new environments and uses for this company’s properties, so you’ll have to move smoothly from high-level strategic thinking to detailed tactical implementation.
Reporting to the CEO, you’ll oversee a team of over 25 people, including software engineers, quality assurance engineers, tech project managers, sysadmins, a Technical Architect, Director of Operations, and Director of Development. You’ll all be pulling together to build, maintain, and expand the multiple sites and digital media B2B and B2C products that will ensure a strong and profitable future for this company’s storied properties. We need someone who can instill best practices for software development and website operations, foster a creative and energetic dev team culture, and partner effectively with marketing, sales, editorial, and other internal functions as well as outside vendors. Oh, and do it all on budget and on schedule.
