This sprawling hub of medical innovation needs a sure-footed, quick-eyed Type-A type to help copy edit the reams and reams of content that comprise its digital presence. If you’re the kind of editor who never misses a trick, plus has a forceful, go-get ‘em personality (the kind that raises issues before they become issues), we’re awfully eager to hear from you.
Nitty Gritty
We could describe to you what a copy editor does, but that just might be insulting to your dignity. What would maybe be helpful to point out is that this is “true” copy-editing, not top editing, not structural editing, not video editing — meaning that we’re honestly and truly looking for somebody highly-disciplined, somebody who can keep that laser focus going. On the other hand, we want your strong attention to detail and your hyper-organized nature to express itself in the form of proactive and fruitful communication with your colleagues.
Hired Gun Profile
You’ve done high-stakes copy editing for more than a couple of years now, and consider it the critical profession that it is. You’re relentless in chasing down the right usage, spelling, abbreviations, medical terms — and you’re tireless in using the style guide until it all becomes muscle memory. You would have changed out that last m-dash for a semicolon, most likely, such is your fixation on proper mechanics. It would be hugely helpful if you have done this kind of work for a medical publisher or someone else in the healthcare field, and if you’ve been working on the digital side of things, although neither is crucial. What is crucial is are that wicked eye of yours and that wicked intellectual curiosity that keeps you engaged for the long haul.
Inside Skinny
This here’s an in-house long-term freelance gig with an expectation that you’ll be at least part-time on site and putting in about 30-40 hours a week.
