The Hired Guns are seeking a digital-first Deputy Editor to support quality journalism and audience growth at a fast-growing local news site.
The Nitty Gritty
The backstory on the organization and why they need to hire you!
A beloved local news organization in the San Antonio/Austin area is expanding its digital presence and looking for a strong data-driven editor to assign stories, write attention-grabbing headlines, and curate the homepage to inform and engage its audience. From breaking news to arts and culture and the weird but true, you will be the digital editorial director’s right hand. A knack for news, the ability to spot trends, and a deep connection with the local market are as important as the analytics and data chops needed to make the homepage hum and get readers clicking and sharing. This is a role that is part journalism savvy and part audience development — but all filled with fast-paced fun and curiosity. (Hey, it’s Texas after all.)
This job starts out remote, but will (eventually) become an on-site role.
Why You?
How you’ll know if you’re a fit…
You’re a newsmaker at heart with a love of culture and knowledge of San Antonio … the city and the greater market. In addition to your experience assigning and managing writers, crafting killer headlines, and building a top-notch content mix, you are a Chartbeat devotee who is excited about growing audiences and moving the needle on traffic.
You thrive in a fast-paced environment, are comfortable delegating tasks to reporters, and have a deep connection to what makes the local vibe tick. This is a perfect role for someone ready to take their editing and newsroom skills up a notch and to own the traffic growth for a news site. Experience collaborating with social channels and driving growth through newsletters is a plus.
