The Hired Guns are seeking a whip-smart, versatile Director of Data Operations and Governance with great people skills to steward data governance strategy for the world’s leading non-profit in science, exploration, and education.
The Nitty Gritty
The backstory on the company and why they need to hire you!
An international non-profit that you’ve definitely heard of is pushing the boundaries when it comes to educating global audiences on science and the wonders of this world. To adapt to these ever-changing times, they’re looking for a curious, versatile Director of Data Operations and Governance who can execute on all fronts.
The mission – should you choose to accept it – will be to stand up and deliver value by formulating strategies that support the democratization of data. You will oversee the creation of a data platform and data product blueprints that streamline data’s journey into and out of this company’s strategic systems and applications, transforming it to serve the needs of the business. You’ll contribute innovative ideas, champion data and engineering teams, help product development and communications teams, and contribute to the advancement of program operations.
Yes, this is a very fluid role: one day you could be giving presentations to stakeholders helping evangelize data governance and turn it into standards, the next you could be taking strategy and breaking it down into executable steps to help drive autonomous teams to do their work. It’s all about putting a solution architecture strategy in motion that puts guardrails and guidelines in place for this global society. You’ll have 10,000-foot surveillance on everything, making sure projects and teams are moving in the right direction.
If you love to solve problems, enjoy managing people, and are ready to stretch your wings, then this is the gig for you. Did we mention this is a fully remote job for one of the world’s most renowned, mission-driven companies? Yep, it’s a good look.
Why You?
How you’ll know if you’re a fit…
The ideal candidate has 10+ years of experience in the information technology field, with at least 5 years of progressively responsible professional experience leading the development of data systems, architecture, data platforms, and data analytics capabilities in an enterprise organization. You must also have at least 5 years of management experience. That said, you have the hands-on leadership skills necessary to grow a team through the startup phase into a mature organization.
You’re a great operator and executor, and you know how to negotiate relationships and survey the landscape, all from a product mindset. It’s great if you’ve worked in a federated data environment, but it’s not a non-negotiable. You can effectively communicate with and develop excellent working relationships with internal and external stakeholders (this is a must).
Experience or understanding of data-mesh principles and strategy is a requirement, as is a strong understanding of domain-driven design principles. Demonstrated experience designing, implementing and maintaining distributed cloud-based architectures that include asynchronous messaging using message brokers such as Amazon SQS, Kafka, RabbitMQ, etc. is going to be very helpful. Experience leading Salesforce implementation and development is a plus.
The Inside Skinny
Why you should quit your job right now and join this team!
When your alarm goes off in the morning, you’ll jump to your feet, feeling great about working for an organization that is promoting scientific discovery and protecting the natural world! Not to mention, you’ll be working at a very senior level, so you’ll have a lot of sway and room for growth. Ready to hear more and meet with the Senior Director of Data Products? Great. We want to hear from you today!
