This company sells stationery. A lot of really nice stationery. But this Hired Guns client has set their sights on something bigger: they want to mold the way we share the moments that make up our lives. They’re currently deep in rethink mode, and they want an E-Commerce Director who can come in and help dream up as-yet-undreamt-of products.
The right person for this role could be an E-Commerce Director, a Product Manager or even a Product Marketer. Regardless of your title, you relish rethinks and live for builds. We need a proven thought leader who can turn an incredible brand into a much bigger online business. The role will require a comprehensive understanding of operations, budgets, finance, marketing and merchandising analysis, paybacks, and e-commerce ROI analysis. You also need to be an acquisition/ retention brainiac, so be sure to tell us about your work with online marketing, driving sales growth and customer acquisition, and utilizing email, display advertising, and social media. We also want a user-centered design devotee. Experience managing outside agencies from RFP development through build is mission-critical (and you need to convince us that you know how to crack the whip).
The company has set up an office in Gotham specifically devoted to innovating this new product. You’ll report to the Chief Digital Officer and will work in tandem with the CTO and the CEO on scoping and building the product. (We hope you like sprints!) As the E-Commerce Director, you will be the chief cook and bottle washer, so we need someone who is strategic but is also brass-tacks.
There are three key initiatives that you have to deliver on:
- Optimize the current site. They have an e-commerce site and need to keep it going while the innovation is happening. You should be able to go after low-hanging fruit and make immediate recommendations for improvement with a few quick fixes. (Part of the interview process will include you talking about changes you would make to the site today.)
- Build new e-commerce site 2.0. Manage the RFP process, pick the agency, and keep the agency’s feet to the fire. Get it done and relaunch with a kick-ass site.
- Drive the future of innovation. This is the fun part. Once the e-commerce product gets under control and starts living up to its full potential, you’ll be charged with helping to create a new relationship with customers and fans through new web platforms and product extensions.
To support those goals, you’ll need to maximize profitability of all online and email merchandising and marketing. By coordinating creative campaigns, you will increase sales, drive traffic, and improve customer acquisition and retention. You’ll own the execution of annual plans to achieve sales goals, expense management, and operating profit objectives.
The people at this company are smart and motivated. It’s a family, and people work there for years and years. So, you have to definitely be a diplomat to drive your ideas.
Please note: this position requires very light travel, roughly one overnight trip per month to the company’s headquarters, which is within driving distance from New York City.
For this role, we love DIYers, people who love hand-crafted anything who think they can bring the Etsy.com vibe to creative correspondence. Speak up.
