The Hired Guns are seeking a fresh-voiced Features Editor to drive weekend culture coverage for a Houston-based digital media property.

This culture-forward arts and entertainment site is expanding its editorial team and is now searching for a brand-new Features Editor to cover the Houston weekend culture beat. If you can see yourself as a future Editor-in-Chief, this is the job that will help catapult your career there.

Just be aware: this is literally a weekend-long role — as the Weekend Features Editor, you will be working Thursday through Sunday planning, assigning, editing and publishing long-form features and news stories.

Here’s what that looks like in practice: Thursday and Friday will be focused on developing longer-form features to anchor weekend publishing and draw in new readers. On Saturday and Sunday, you will own coverage of news events, acting as the point-person if anything big breaks. In addition to reporting and writing, duties will include home-page curation, content aggregation, and posting to social-media channels.

You have a “Big J”-Journalism background where you learned how to craft news and story and have secured a few big bylines along the way. You have several years of experience covering breaking news and feature stories for a digital news operation. You’ve established a unique voice, a great story sense, and a history of growing digital audiences, discovering trending stories, and acting quickly on breaking news.

While it’s true that you’re a writer first, over time you’ve been honing your long-form breadth and editor skills and are yearning for a chance to make your mark as a Features Editor. You’ve assigned stories, top-edited copy, and scored major online beats, all the while composing SEO-magnet headlines.
