As many of you know, the work world ain’t so friendly anymore. That’s about to change. This Hired Guns client, a best-in-class leadership and development company, is building an online program that will actually educate people on the art and science of networking. And they need you, a visionary Product Director with a vision for online education and where it’s heading, to take them to the next level.
Your special power as a Product Director or Senior Product Manager is that you have outstanding intuition about what the audience is longing for. You can envision outstanding products, build great business cases, and assemble the right design, UX and tech teams to get the job done. Your work transcends platforms — though Drupal would be good to have — and can cut across screens (web, tablets, smartphones). You’re Agile all the way and can pivot like the best of ’em as you build, test and launch minimum viable products in quick sprints. In particular you like collaborating with all of your stakeholders, from the content producers (the educators) to your audience (the students). And you believe strongly in testing as you go, getting products out early for comment and then refining.
Additionally, you understand the online education marketplace, know where we are right now in the evolution of the space, and can build a platform that will get prospective students to the top of the sales funnel, into it and truly learning — and keep them coming back for more. You’re someone who can look beyond building traditional education systems by integrating the special sauce found in avid communities like WeightWatchers and Meetup with the social utility found in Foursquare. That’s because you understand usability and like to build elegant products that work and serve the needs of the customer. You’re a metrics-focused leader who drives the businesses you run through KPIs that count. Ideally, you’ve had operational oversight and P/L responsibility — or you’re ready to step into a role that has both. You also know how to select and drive outside agency partnerships. You will report to the CEO of the company and will also be responsible for quarterly reporting to the board.
Even today, online job boards only account for scoring people 11% of all jobs. Personal networking is still the number one way — and 80% of all jobs are landed that way. Why? When you know how to establish trusted relationships, and learn the patience and skill to do it, it pays dividends not only for one job search, but for a lifetime. And that’s why we need a seasoned product Gun who has the chops to build a truly state-of-the art education platform that will deliver against the needs of its audience. We all know we need to network more, but who is going to teach us to do it? Your product will, by delivering content in a smart and refreshing way that pulls people together online and off.
You’ll have a team of 8 people (and growing) reporting to you, including a Tech Director, UXers, designers, and even the elusive front end dev.
This is not just about networking; it’s about facilitating an emotional revolution in the workplace. You will join with educational pioneers leading the way to a new era of social relationship-centric business. Also, if you have experience with serious games, using gaming mechanics to incentivize and teach new behaviors, you’ll have a tremendous leg up.
If being on the GM track is mission-critical to your career goals, this is the product directorship you want. Rest assured, you’ll get the right skills for your skills bank — from P/L responsibility to true product ownership and management.
