React Native Mobile Engineer Wanted at Mission-Driven News Org
Pay range: $50 to $100 per hour, depending on experience
Are You the Missing Piece?
A nationally recognized non-profit news organization is looking for a Mobile Software Engineer to help power the future of independent journalism across iOS and Android platforms.
This is not your average “ship-tickets-and-disappear-into-Jira” engineering gig. This is mission-driven product development supporting one of the most respected independent news platforms in the country. It’s the kind of organization where believing in your work actually matters. Deeply. If you are not genuinely passionate about independent journalism and aligned with protecting diverse voices and challenging mainstream narratives, this is probably not the right fit. If you are? Keep reading.
They’re looking for someone who can own the mobile experience end-to-end: React Native front-end development, Node.js backend services, App Store and Google Play deployments, streaming/video functionality, performance optimization, troubleshooting, and collaborating directly with engineering and product teams to deliver a world-class experience to a global audience.
The engineering team is small enough that your work will matter immediately, but sophisticated enough that strong technical instincts, autonomy, and clean execution are essential. You won’t be hidden behind layers of bureaucracy or disconnected from the product. Your code will directly impact how millions of people consume independent reporting around the world.
If you’ve been craving a role where your technical work actually aligns with your values – and where journalism, media,
technology, and social impact intersect — this could be a very special opportunity for you.
What’s it going to take to score an interview?
- Strong React Native and Node.js engineering experience (3+ years)
- Solid command of JavaScript + TypeScript
- Experience owning App Store + Google Play deployments and release workflows
- Ability to operate independently in a fully remote environment, working EST hours
- Strong understanding of mobile architecture, scalability, reliability, and performance optimization
- Experience troubleshooting across both mobile and backend systems
- Comfortable collaborating cross-functionally with editorial, design, and product stakeholders
- Media, streaming, or video platform experience is a huge plus
- Experience with live/on-demand video, CDNs, HLS/DASH, or react-native-video gets attention fast
- Most importantly, authentic alignment with independent journalism and mission-driven work is paramount
You should take this meeting because …
Very few engineering roles let you combine strong technical ownership with genuine social impact. This one does. You’ll get the opportunity to build products that directly support independent journalism at a time when trust in media, access to information, and diverse perspectives matter more than ever. It’s remote, flexible, highly collaborative, and deeply purpose-driven. If you’re tired of building ad tech, optimizing conversion funnels, or working on products you don’t actually care about, this role offers something far more meaningful: the chance to build technology that informs, challenges, and impacts the world.
