The Hired Guns are seeking a highly articulate, confident, diplomatic and well-educated individual to conduct telephone-based research interviews with Japanese-speaking financial services executives. This gig will last roughly six weeks and will require about 15 to 20 hours per week.
If you’re a journalist, social scientist/social science major, translator, interpreter, or someone with financial services experience, you could have the right background for this gig — the key success factors are the ability to learn new subject matter quickly and experience in conducting probing interviews on complex subjects. Absolutely required is native-level fluency in spoken Japanese (fluent written Japanese strongly preferred). Fluent spoken and written English is also required, as is the ability to translate between Japanese and English.
We’d love to find someone who is a committed freelancer with a flexible schedule, because there’s likely to be follow-on work in the future with you as the go-to person.
You will be contacting Japan-based clients of this major financial institution to set up and conduct in-depth client feedback surveys/interviews via telephone. The calls will be recorded, and you will translate the interviews into English. Familiarity with the financial services industry is desirable but not required, as you will receive training to familiarize you with the industry, products, and all the necessary terminology.
You will conduct the interviews remotely from your home office, which needs to be equipped with broadband Internet and a land telephone line. The work is part-time, and the actual calls will need to be conducted during Japanese business hours. This is by no means telemarketing, and you will not be “cold-calling”: you will receive a list of people to contact, and they have existing relationships with the client. We strongly prefer residents of the New York City metro area: the work is remote, but your physical presence will be needed for occasional meetings.
Individuals of any nationality who meet the above requirements are encouraged to apply. However, we will look for evidence of extensive residence, work, and/or study in Japan in deciding which applicants we will consider. Be advised, if your CV looks promising, we will arrange for a phone call between you and a fluent Japanese speaker who will make a judgment on your language ability, so please don’t inflate your linguistic skills on your resume!
If you’re a freelancer with native fluency in Japanese and the ability to jump on an immediate assignment, ping us ASAP!
All qualified applicants will receive consideration without regard to race, color, religion, sex, national origin, creed, age, sexual orientation, veteran status, marital status, disability, or any other status protected by applicable law.
