A major icon in the New York media landscape is in search of a senior, strategic manager to help develop and execute the vision of its digital future. If you’ve got experience overseeing product developers and designers — especially in the media space — and thrive on turning vision into process, then we want to hear from you on this one.
Nitty Gritty
It’s truly a moment of transition for this venerable organization, as it evolves from a traditional non-profit media company to a digital-forward brand. Such inflexion points call for wise, clear-eyed leadership and a steady hand, which is exactly where you come in. As the senior director of product on the growing digital team, you’ll execute on the tactical level — managing the product managers and design teams to produce their very best work (with a strong emphasis on user focus) and defining a positive, innovative culture. But you’ll also have a seat at the strategy table, driving the conversation about how the company reinvents itself and carving out a path into the digital age. Within your remit will fall all public-facing platforms – -web, mobile, emerging — as well as internal systems. You’ll be creating a roadmap and ensuring that things move forward in a constructive way.
The nitty-gritty of the Nitty Gritty, of course, shall include such details as developing proposals, writing RFPs, giving presentations, fleshing out business plans, negotiating and managing vendor agreements, seeing to it that cross-departmental relationships flourish, and keeping up-to-the-minute on technologies, digital trends and even the changes in social behavior that will affect the biz. All of your activities, of course, will be done under time constraints — but ain’t that just like life, though?
Hired Gun Profile
The two must-have’s for this role are management experience and media experience — preferably at a large and well-known company (We’re talking 8-plus years of SDLC innovation and nice hefty track record of product ownership with full KPI responsibility). Further, you have a certain gravitas, an ability to function effectively at a senior level. Managing conflict? Motivating cross-functional teams? Thinking big? That’s all you. On top of which, you’re practically obsessed with the idea of the customer, the user, making sure that a consumer vision pervades everything you do. Built into that is an interest in and facility with data, which you consult on a regular basis to inform and check your decisions.
You possess an enviable facility with technology (especially those relevant to mobile and emerging devices), and can easily discuss hands-on challenges with engineer types. What you don’t already know, you can quickly and independently learn. And, contrary to stereotypes about tech-oriented people, you happen to be a superior communicator, both orally and in writing.
