The Hired Guns are seeking a Senior Digital Product Manager, Luxury E-Commerce to step up to a thrilling challenge: how to help an e-retail leader lead the pack in selling products that are notoriously difficult to sell online, namely luxury products (think jewelry, high-end cosmetics, exclusive apparel lines) whose buyers traditionally demand a tactile, high-touch, in-person purchasing experience. (Note: This job is all about owning the digital shopping experience, not the design and development of luxury products themselves.)
The Nitty Gritty
The backstory on the organization and why they need to hire you!
One of the best-known brands in all of retail, this company got its start by building one of the most famous brick-and-mortar brands in retailing history, so they know how to present a deluxe IRL shopping experience. But one of the core challenges in digital commerce has always been how to expand from products where you don’t have to see and touch (books, toys) to items with a higher price point (we’re talking $500 and up!) and a corresponding expectation of high service and a hands-on, emotional experience. Cue … you! You’ll be the champion and innovator who generates and adapts ideas through your own creativity and experience and through your intimate knowledge of leading competitive efforts.
This is going to be a big effort on the part of this retailer, and you’ll take the lead in end-to-end execution of digital efforts around luxury. The challenges you’ll tackle involve design, merchandising, content, logistics, and more, so you’ll be working shoulder-to-shoulder with a vast number of cross-functional stakeholders. You’ll develop and own the digital innovation roadmap, develop business cases and pitch them successfully to leadership, look around corners for as-yet unanticipated problems and yet-to-be-spotted trends, and crack the code that elevates digital retail from the mundane to the magical.
Why You?
How you’ll know if you’re a fit…
We’re looking for somebody with a rare mix of experiences and capabilities. You’ve got significant experience (at least 5 years) building big e-commerce products and digital experiences where you’ve had end-to-end ownership. You must have worked on luxury brands or luxury retail (or at an agency where you handled them as clients), because we need that deep understanding of the emotive, storytelling aspect of luxury. E-commerce experience is a must, and in-store experience a big giant plus!
But whether your career path is explicitly in product management or in an adjoining area like merchandising, you’ve got to think like a product manager: with a holistic ownership of the entire journey and an exceptional level of cross-functional communication. You thrive on complexity, and a certain degree of creative chaos. But despite your creative flair, solid instincts, and problem-solving acumen, you know that the best decisions are driven by hard data, and you know how to get it and use it.
The Inside Skinny
Why you should quit your job right now and join this organization!
Think about taking a leadership role at one of the final frontiers of digital commerce, solving problems that have daunted industry leaders for years. Think about building what amounts to a stand-alone business within this venerable institution in retail. Think about doing all that amidst the excitement of joining a product dream team with a vast diversity of viewpoints in a startup-style culture.
