The Hired Guns are seeking a seasoned Assistant Managing Editor to support a new diversity-and-equity vertical at a thriving digital news magazine for K-12 educators.
Salary range: $80,000 to $120,000 per year
The Nitty Gritty
The backstory on the company and why they need to hire you!
A daily online digital publication serving professionals in the K-12 education sector is hiring an experienced Assistant Managing Editor to oversee a team of writers and reporters for their highly acclaimed publication. As a B2B publication for teachers, principals, superintendents, and administrators, this outlet serves the news, opinions, spotlights, and features that educators and administrators care about most.
In this role, you will focus on informing and supporting the audience around Diversity and Inclusion, including inclusivity and equity, friction in education, culture wars, and access to diverse books. At the head of a team of 4 to 5 reporters, you will be responsible for planning coverage, top-editing digital articles, and shaping the conversations highlighting how underrepresented communities (BIPOC and LGBTQ) have been marginalized in the U.S. education system. You will also home in on trends, controversy, and education techniques relevant to K-12 education.
Why You?
How you’ll know if you’re a fit…
You’re a highly collaborative editor and experienced manager who’s hungry to dig in and report on the conversations impacting the education sector around DEI. With 3+ years experience as an editor (or 5+ as a reporter), you have a background covering the education sector, ideally K-12, for a reputable, fast-paced digital news organization. As an editor, your role has focused on overseeing a high tempo of content production from reporters – in other words, you have the pace of a daily in your DNA. With your “make-it-happen” attitude, you’ve run successful teams and published groundbreaking stories, and your clear understanding and appreciation for journalism is showcased through your crafting of complex stories.
Most importantly, you have a history of spotting and directing strong writers. Even if you have not covered education, but have reported on diversity, equity and inclusion in underrepresented communities, you are encouraged to apply.
The Inside Skinny
Why you should quit your job right now and join this team!
Ready to drive a high level of content production around a mission-driven topic? This is an excellent opportunity to level up your career under a collaborative team with a lot of industry clout. In addition to covering and contributing to the conversation around equity in education, you will have the chance to deep-dive into the stories and topics that will shape the future of US education.
