If you believe it’s high time you apply that outsized homo sapiens brain of yours to really making social sing, en route to huge audience development wins, we think you’ll want to read this one very carefully. One of the world’s most respected companies is building out a well-funded and extremely talented content lab to make this happen. This is your chance — go, Smart Monkey, go!
Nitty Gritty
The content lab is a startup within the vastly larger, long-established organization. It will consist of an editor and four writers, plus you the Audience Engagement Director and your one direct report (You’ll be working with agencies on strategies and execution). The watchword here will be “amplification,” not just of the audience but of the content itself. You’ll start by taking a careful look at the data and knowing the personae you’re most trying to reach. Then you’ll work with the editor on a strategy for hitting those folks where they live, figuring out which stories to tell, and how to tell them, in order to create an increasingly massive audience that clicks through to the website, bolstering the company’s already considerable reputation along the way. Infographics, videos, long-form, lists, links, campaigns, strategic partnerships, syndication — you’ll pull out all the stops and, being the expert, likely add stuff to that list that we Dumb Monkeys aren’t even aware can be done.
The emphasis is on being proactive and a thought leader. You won’t think of yourself as a “social media manager,” but rather as a change agent; an evangelist; a proactive dynamo who’s picking the brains of senior leaders, attending conferences, building war rooms, interviewing the CEO, and inspiring the whole troop to refresh its thinking and strike out in new and fruitful directions. As stated, you’ll manage your direct report and outside teams to create world-class content, staying within budget and meeting departmental KPIs.
Hired Gun Profile
You’ve held social-media roles for a solid seven or so years now, with some of that time having been spent at a major consumer brand, and with some experience of managing paid social in the mix. You can point to proven success at achieving significant traffic growth by implementing a syndication strategy across diverse channels.
Like our fabled Smart Monkey, you’re aware of the very latest technologies and techniques available — you know what’s coming before any of the rest of us, and you’ve got great ideas for optimizing all that potential. You’re deeply familiar with data and measurement tools and techniques — you’d feel foolish and naked attempting any kind of strategy that didn’t make full use of them. You possess an uncanny editorial mind, a rhetorician’s practical sense for knowing one’s audience, a digital marketer’s ability to study the landscape, and a writer’s ability to craft language to maximum effect — and to recognize good writing in others. Finally, you’re boundlessly enthusiastic and a natural collaborator who’s all about leading by example.
Inside Skinny
This is a highly matrixed organization, so be sure to highlight your experiences that show you can thrive in that type of structure.
