Some directors in the digital sphere are business-first, some (like the ones this brand is looking to hire) are more tech-centric, i.e., strategic thinkers and leaders who climbed the ladder on the development side. To each his own, live and let live … And yet an MBA ships no new releases, amirite? Are you a real innovator with first-class technical chops? Then this is your dream gig.
This is one of those change/innovation gigs, the kind we love to tell you about. An extremely well-established media entity is undertaking a wholesale transformation of all of its digital platforms, and it needs a seasoned director with real technical chops to spearhead the effort. You’ll be more than an evangelist, more than a figurehead, more than an engineer — you’ll be the chief tech strategist, the principal software architect, and the manager of a digital-tech team that handles front- and back-end development, dev opps and QA. You’ll set the tone, identify the tools and tactics, and execute, bringing positive change to a venerable organization. That’s the stuff, right there. Hell yeah?
Nitty Gritty
Step one: Cast a cold eye on the tech organization, identifying which structures and practices are already working and what needs to change. Nothing shall escape thy scrutiny — the multiple websites, the CMS, the interactive features, video, and the nascent movement toward customization. You’ll evaluate the code, you’ll establish a new set of best practices and technical success metrics, and you’ll work with other senior folks on an overall strategic direction, priorities and vision for the company’s digital efforts, including security risk assessment and mitigation.
In so doing, you’ll hammer out innovative workflows, and you’ll conduct detailed project planning, budgeting, forecasting, and long-term goal setting, with the metrics to keep you honest along the way. And in keeping with your thought-leader status, you’ll stay right up to the minute on industry trends, new technologies and anything else that can keep the organization out in front, which is what you’re being brought on board to accomplish.
Hired Gun Profile
This is your corner of the sandbox, no doubt about it. You’ve been steeped in development engineering for more than a decade, during which you’ve excelled as a software architect and a leader of successful, complex teams through multiple product life cycles. You’ve become a true-blue expert in the Agile methodology, not to mention a whole slew of such tools as JavaScript, JQuery, CSS, HTML, Adobe Site Catalyst, Google Analytics, Twitter Analytics, Optimizely, comScore and social listening tools. You’ve developed analytics strategies. You’ve already managed serious budgets and will require no hand-holding there.
You’re extremely motivated and the kind of worker who sees and understands the organization’s business goals and knows intuitively which actions and strategies will further them. You don’t just believe in collaboration, you embody it, reaching out for the good input wherever you can find it, and lending your expertise liberally. You’re excited about introducing change and discovering new ways of improving processes and products.
Inside Skinny
We’re not particular about whether your experience is primarily with agencies or brands, but we’d certainly be especially interested in any work you’ve done for major media companies.
Net Net
Don’t let the “nonprofit” bit scare you — this place takes very good care of its employees. So, then: Successful and established company, calling on you to provide strategic vision for a major digital transformation? We’ll just go on ahead and say it for you: Hell, yeah.
