The Hired Guns are seeking a Product Designer with mobile and IoT experience for our MedTech client based in NYC. If you are deeply interested in building and perfecting technology using predictive analytics and data science to improve people’s health, especially kids’ health, this gig’s for you.
Nitty Gritty
In this role, you’ll be joining a nascent telemedicine team made up of behavioral psychologists, scientists, and physicians to design and engineer mobile and smart home apps that will positively impact human behavior and the lives of patients.
As the product design lead, your first initiative will be the gamification of a mobile app that combines machine learning with the human touch to teach users (in this case, kids and their parents) how to observe and respond to developmental milestones both physical and mental. The “game” element is a fun way to let the kids provide information that will generate progress tracking and recommendations to their parents. Together, human and bot will formulate a plan for better health outcomes.
The main environment you’ll be designing for will be mobile, both Android and iOS, with a huge audio/visual aspect to get the AI the kind of info it needs. Google Home is also on the agenda, so if all goes well, you can expect more smart devices supported.
What Success Looks Like
In your first few months, you’ll turn pie-in-the-sky possibility into operational products using your UX-infused design skills. You’ll put medical conditions into a real-life context for real-life users and find a way for scientists to make meaningful use of real-time data.
Hired Gun Profile
Beauty comes in many forms, art is subjective, and yet all agree your portfolio of design assets is the most gorgeous one they’ve ever seen. Beneath your simple, intuitive designs stand sturdy wireframes that enable comprehensive data to surge fluidly in both directions. When all’s said and done, user and AI get exactly what they need and nothing extraneous.
The winning designer enjoys working closely with engineering to produce incredibly interesting and impactful work. If you’ve got experience speaking Engineer-ese in writing, you’ve got a jump on the competition, but the real advantage goes to full-stack designers with tons of experience in hands-on product design and development as well as managing teams and processes.
A healthcare background would be excellent, but isn’t essential. The people who should really apply to this job are self-starters who like to do the hardest item on their to-do list first thing in the day. Maybe that’s why your portfolio outshines the rest; you’re up with the sun.
Inside Skinny
A true passion for human-centered design is a must to excel in this role. And if you love books like Homo Deus by Yuval Noah Harari and Team Human by Douglas Rushkoff, you are certain to have a killer interview with the head of product (your future boss).
Net-Net
There are a lot of product design opportunities out there, but very few of them offer a chance of this magnitude to help people. By providing a personalized progress monitor to kids at an early age, you’re saving them years, and possibly a lifetime, of developmental struggle. It’s a highly rewarding gig for a brilliant product designer with a strong altruistic streak.
All qualified applicants will receive consideration without regard to race, color, religion, sex, national origin, creed, age, sexual orientation, veteran status, marital status, disability, or any other status protected by applicable law.
