The Hired Guns are seeking a Senior Digital Strategist to manage email and web at a fast-paced, progressive non-profit. Veteran email managers with organizing experience and policy writing expertise, come defend democracy by mobilizing over two million progressive Americans. If you’re committed to combating corruption, advocating for democracy, getting money out of politics and getting voters into voting booths, prepare to be inspired by working alongside these watchdogs who aren’t just sitting on the sidelines, but driving hundreds of thousands of calls to Congress.
Nitty Gritty
This digital-first not-for-profit is hitting big numbers with its grassroots activism to give the people back their voice in Washington. It’s all thanks to a huge network of quick-mobilizing progressives, and email and web are massive components of keeping its base informed and involved. (But unlike a lot of political activism orgs, you’ll work normal hours.)
As this org moves from in-the-streets action (protests and calls) to driving people to the ballot box to vote for pro-democracy ballot initiatives and progressive candidates, you’ll be called upon to identify and hit specific benchmarks per initiative. But unlike most email programs, you’ll be aiming at call numbers and voter commits, not fundraising numbers. To do this, you’ll confer with the Digital Director to establish the story behind the talking points that reaches readers on a personal level and motivates them to take action. Of course, figuring out what that point is, and how to deliver it, will take all your A/B testing prowess while improving UX along the way.
What Success Looks Like
If your efforts can be shown to have a direct effect on raising public outcry to stop the Trump agenda in its tracks and defeat him in 2020, you’ll have done your job. At the same time, you’ll help pass state-level initiatives that will strengthen our democracy and empower millions of voters.
Hired Gun Profile
Change starts from within, and this outfit isn’t looking for a sleepy hand on the tiller. They want a reformer who can identify flaws and inefficiencies, then turn them into opportunities for improvement. The wisdom to make only the right changes comes from your experience doing this gig before, ideally at an organizing — though not necessarily political — entity.
You’ve put time in managing an email program; this isn’t a growth spot. On your way up, you learned quite a bit about A/B testing and segmentation.
You also learned a thing or two about leadership. The two people under you are still fairly new (but good!) at this, and a great boss can turn their enthusiasm and experience into a growth and learning period. You know when to be collaborative and when to take the reins.
You also know the different roles of email and a website and can strategize a message accordingly. Your day-to-day reach is email but some things want a more substantial engagement. You’re a handy writer and editor who can turn a message into clear, gripping content that speaks to the audience with empathy and reason. Finding the humanizing story behind each campaign is a must.
Most of all, you’ve got to be passionate about the cause.
Inside Skinny
If you only have one skill, email will get you in the door. Web alone won’t make the grade.
