Everything about this job is big: Big company, big responsibility, big opportunity. To say that the company has heft is an understatement: It reaches 100 million people monthly, in more than 100 regions. As for the work, you’d be providing senior leadership around architecture and development for all of the company’s digital publishing efforts. All told, it’s a rare chance to flex your executive muscle, bringing to bear all the technical and managerial skills you’ve acquired over the years.
Nitty Gritty
Twenty or so software engineers and systems architects will report up to you, helping you along in your mission of delivering world-class design and development of server-side applications in furtherance of the company’s strategic goals. Together, you’ll collaborate with content creators to build consumer-facing digital products (web, mobile, native) in an iterative and agile development environment. You’ll constantly be thinking about how all your products fit together, how exactly things are being built, how cohesive and intuitive your technology is as a system. Considerations within that shall include taxonomy, tagging, Natural Language Processing, DevOps, and delivery automation. Not to mention close work with such partner teams as Platform as a Service, infrastructure, data analytics, and cybersecurity.
And although you’re as capable as anybody down in the weeds, the real call here is for you to provide inspiring leadership and careful stewardship of the team. You’ll go out there and find the very best digital talent and then see to it that they’re so challenged and rewarded by their work that they can’t be poached. Besides making sure deadlines are being met and budgets adhered to, you’ll consciously infuse your team with a spirit of collaboration and a drive for excellence, creating the kind of work environment in which ideas are shared liberally, boundaries are blurred, and talent flourishes.
Hired Gun Profile
You’ve spent a decade in the world of tech, with six of those years in management. You’ve banged around in various areas, picking up all kinds of skills — cybersecurity, cloud, etc. — but you have a particular flair for architecture, since you enjoy thinking about systems and how their various components join to form a whole. You rejoice in elegant solutions, especially when a series of elegant solutions combines into an elegant system, and nothing gives you greater pleasure than to build such systems yourself.
Over the years, you’ve also revealed a passion for managing people, taking great pleasure in nurturing talent and watching an entire team’s capabilities expand under your guidance. To you, a highly efficient workflow is as fun and rewarding to create as is a beautiful piece of technology. You allocate resources wisely, and you have an eye for identifying gaps and promptly finding solutions for filling them.
Finally, you’re a first-rate communicator; nobody ever leaves a meeting with you wondering exactly what you were talking about or what you expect to happen next. You speak and write with clarity and warmth, making such interactions a pleasure.
