The Hired Guns are seeking a driven, entrepreneurial Senior Manager of Subscription and Membership Marketing to build a premium subscription offering, from the ground up, for a media organization based in San Francisco.
Salary range: $125,000 to $175,000 per year
The Nitty Gritty
The backstory on the company and why they need to hire you!
This well-financed media organization has an established “freemium” business (a free newsletter), and now they’re launching a premium subscription offering. As their Senior Manager of Subscription and Membership Marketing, you’ll build this product from the ground up. Operating like the GM of the premium property, you’ll own content strategy, membership rewards, pricing modeling, digital marketing, analytics and testing, and optimization.
Because this is the start-up phase, you’ll begin by running the business as an internal solo entrepreneur, augmented by vendors and freelancers, plus of course the whole editorial and product team from the existing business to help and advise you. Working closely with the audience development, social media and editorial teams, you’ll begin to grow the paid subscription/ membership base. And as that gets off the ground, you’ll start to recruit your own team to lever up the business.
Why You?
How you’ll know if you’re a fit…
You have a significant track record in subscription or membership marketing of a paid premium offering, most recently as the second or third in command of a subscription marketing team. You’ve proven yourself by starting, scaling, or rebooting a paid subscription product and delivering meaningful audience and revenue growth. And now you’re ready to take the helm (because you’ve been doing all the work anyhow, right?)
The must-haves for this job include:
- understanding of freemium models, especially newsletters
- experience driving free subscribers into paid subscriptions
- conversion funnel obsessed
- strong business sense – the know-how to set up the program from scratch
- identifying the right software partners and project-managing the implementation of the tech stack
- acquisition and growth marketing, demand gen
- retention and loyalty programs
- content strategy
- development of compelling premium offers
- testing, optimization, and analytics
While we’d love someone who has experience in journalism or publishing, it’s not a deal-breaker if you don’t. If you’ve established a premium membership property at an innovative organization, such as a tech player in Silicon Valley – we’d be just as happy to hear from you.
The Inside Skinny
Why you should quit your job right now and join this team!
This is the chance of a lifetime to leverage all of the experience and know-how of an entire career in subscription and membership marketing and lay it all on the line to build something new, from scratch, your way.
