The Hired Guns are seeking a passionate reporter to support trending news coverage at a fast-growing pop culture site devoted to all things Houston.

Salary range: $50,000 to $60,000 per year

You’ll be joining a crack trending news team as the boots on the ground for anything pop culture and trending news in the Lone Star State. Your individual beat will be coverage of local Houston culture and neighborhood news, as well as profiles about the city and its residents. As a reporter covering everything from the ever-changing food scene to the real estate market, you have the secret sauce that turns a story into a sensation. This is an entrepreneurial team looking for a voice-y beat reporter to shine a line on everything that makes Houston special.

How you’ll know if you’re a fit…

You have experience as a reporter/writer covering interesting news and topics – with the clips to prove it. We’re open to both seasoned reporters and fairly recent journalism grads (think 2+ years with some significant work on your school website covering similar topics).

At heart, you are passionate about discovering stories and crafting unique narratives that weave a tale of changing communities and cities. Most of all, you are an idea machine with excellent writing and reporting skills who can work independently in a fast-paced newsroom environment. If you understand the digital news cycle and have past experience with writing pieces that have moved the needle on audience engagement, this could be the right fit for you.

We would love a local Houstonian (whether you’re there now or looking for a reason to come back home) who can easily describe what the city means to city dwellers as well as suburbanites, lifers as well as transplants. But we’re also completely open to a transplant from someplace like Dallas or Austin, especially if you come packing serious cred having written for “Big J Journalism” outlets like the Dallas Morning News, Texas Monthly or Austin Statesman.
