The Hired Guns are seeking a dynamic Director of Fundraising – Major Gifts to head a diverse fundraising team at one of the world’s most prominent independent news outlets.
Salary range: $125,000 to $150,000 per year

As this independent news organization approaches its thirtieth anniversary, they need an experienced and passionate Director of Fundraising – Major Gifts to ensure their continued financial sustainability and growth. It will be your responsibility to advance existing fundraising programs, especially with major gifts ($50,000 to $500,000), and to incubate new fundraising strategies that support their operating budget.
You will spearhead long- and short-term revenue goals, identify strategies, and oversee all fundraising activities—including foundation grants, individual giving, major gifts and planned giving. You’ll be supported by a team of three full-time staff members.
You’ll use your graceful, diplomatic voice and presence to speak to donors of all types and establish and maintain relationships with key individual and institutional funders, including personally soliciting new and renewing five- and six-figure gifts.
You’ll use your meticulous writing skills to craft proposals, reports, solicitations and other copy to support fundraising initiatives and ensure consistency and tone across all department communications.

The ideal candidate has 6+ years of experience in major gifts, with at least 3 years of leading a team to success. You can craft innovative campaigns and execute programs to fundraise from individuals at smaller dollar points and move those people through the ranks. You must have an interest in journalism, international policy, and progressive causes and policies. You’re a natural-born leader who embodies grace and diplomacy when talking to donors of all types.

- 6+ years leading multi-source development efforts for a $5M+ organization
- Prior history leading a multi-person fundraising team
- Excellent communicator in writing, on calls, and in person
- Experience planning and executing fundraising events
- Success soliciting and stewarding five- and six-figure gifts from foundations and individuals
- Facility with fundraising tools and software including CRM databases, email marketing, word processing, and spreadsheet applications
